Impatience is not a virtue at the present time. This campaign will not succeed overnight, nor should we be disappointed when we don't attract immediate mass support. Actions like the "book-in" at Barclays on Saturday, in its peaceful, good-humoured manner, will have introduced large numbers of previously uncommitted bank customers to the realities of the way the public is paying for bankers' bonuses. It is also important to maintain friendly relations with the police, who are themselves victims of the cuts. This is not to say that we should evade confrontation as a definite strategy. Having had my nose broken by a police truncheon in Grosvenor Square in 1969, I am under no illusions about this. But I urge Comrade Ilyitch to study the twin-track strategy adopted by the Bolsheviks under the leadership of his namesake, when they continued to plan for insurrection while at the same time playing a part in the state Duma. At the moment we have a major task ahead in convincing the general public of the nature of the coup d'etat inflicted upon the country by the Con-Dem elected dictatorship. It is a time for calm and reasoned work, not hot-headedness. Bradford is not Tripoli, Bahrain or Cairo. Not yet, anyway.
